Teach yourself about Ruby-throated Hummingbirds using eBird's Explore features
Переглядів 4752 роки тому
One of the most common questions among hummingbird enthusiasts everywhere has to do with when they arrive and when they will be leaving and when to take feeders down if ever. Most of those questions can be easily answered using eBird's Explore features such as bar charts and line graphs. This tutorial shows you how to do just that for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird in Alachua County, Florida. No...
Families at the Feeder: Northern Cardinal, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee | June 17, 2021
Переглядів 7593 роки тому
Feeder activity is up in back yards on the cusp of summer with this season's fleglings being responsible for most of the increase we're enjoying. In my yard, it's Northern Cardinals all day with Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Blue Jay, and Mourning Dove making up almost all of the rest of the activity. As common as the Northern Cardinal is in our area, the variabil...
Birdbath Bonanza featuring Cedar Waxwings and Eastern Bluebirds | February 2021 | Archer, FL
Переглядів 2983 роки тому
Well designed and maintained water features tend to bring more avian diversity into a yard than feeders, especially if the bath has an accessory that brings movement to the basin such as a dripper or mister. It doesn't have to be finely crafted. My first birdbath was a terra cotta planter base and the dripper was a quart milk jug with a pinhole strung up over the basin on nylon cord. It didn't ...
American Goldfinch flock during the final flourish 032021 second camera

This is a follow-up to the last video posted on American Goldfinches. I had a second camera up to capture the wider view and got more of the birds in this flock. So, if you're trying to keep track of how many birds are in this flock, add it to the mental tally from the video posted last week and don't forget to figure in all the birds you hear in the trees above during this video. This flock is...

If you're not experiencing The Final Flourish of American Goldfinches at your feeders, this video is for you. Just hit play and enjoy just under 30 solid minutes of Final Flourish feeding frenzy. American Goldfinch season was "solidly decent" in North Central Florida this winter. The pause, or false migration, happened when the hardwoods budded out in February and The Final Flourish occurred as...
Grosbeak - Black-headed or Rose-breasted? NW, Gainesville, FL March 19, 2021
Переглядів 2733 роки тому
Thank you Matt Neilson and Laura Bedinger for this footage. I've edited it video to emphasize some looks at the field marks that might be most helpful to confirm that this is a very rare Black-headed Grosbeak or if it is a slightly early but far more common migrant Rose-breasted Grosbeak or, perhaps, a hybrid of the two. I'm publishing this with all due respects to Matt, Laura, and anyone else ...
Looking forward to Ruby-throated Hummingbird season?
Переглядів 6393 роки тому
It was a very busy winter for overwintering hummingbirds in Florida but this is the week that so many of you ask about through the winter. The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (RTHU) that wintered in Mexico and Central America are beginning to return to mainland US. So, yes! It is time to put your hummingbird feeder back out if you did not leave one up all winter LIKE WE ASKED YOU TO😁. There are a fe...
Western Tanager | SW Gainesville, FL | January 29, 2021

Through about 2000, there were no more than a few verified records of Western Tanager having occurred in Alachua County. Since 2000, that number has blossomed to a few dozen and in the last three winters, there has been at least one Western Tanager that has visited a feeder daily throughout. This footage comes from a SW Gainesville feeder. The bird visits daily and has since November. Note the ...
Purple Finch flock and others during irruptive migration | NW Gainesville, FL | January 28, 2021

We work so hard to help people understand the difference between House Finch and Purple Finch. One of the primary distinguishing features is that Purple Finch is hardly ever actually here in Florida. In a typical winter, we get up to a half dozen or so. This winter, it seems that almost everybody has a bunch. This hasn't happened in my birding lifetime and I bet it hasn't happened in at least 5...

Birds like this often go identified only to genus because it's so difficult to make a firm determi...
Black-and-white Warbler and Yellow-rumped Warblers at birdbath | SW Gainesville FL | Dec 3, 2020

The Black-and-white Warbler has been reported a few times as a Bark Butter bird (when Bark Butter is actually used on tree bark) but is known to use birdbaths more regularly although it isn't a common "yard bird" anywhere. However, it is a fairly common migrant and an uncommon overwintering visitor. The Yellow-rumped Warbler is a different story. Almost everyone has at least one in their yard o...

I was living in the Ocala National Forest 3 years ago and I had a swallow-tailed kite that met me at my car in the morning on my way to work for 2 mornings in a row, it swooped down and was grabbing this straw that the forestry service had just spread along the easement of the road and dropping it at my feet as I stood by my car 4 times the first day and 6 times the next morning. This bird and I never broke eye contact the whole time and keep in mind its doing these tight turns in front of me in about a 20 foot circle. Very cool experience, my number 3 coolest bird interaction

This is a little clip I made about him. Basically everything I said in the last comment. ua-cam.com/video/uzsG92zOOwI/v-deo.html ... One thing to consider when deciding whether or not to grow your own worms is that with a stock of worms, you'll be the hit of the party for a whole lot of critters. Lizards, birds, chickens, and most recently... a tarantula I kept for a day in a terrarium. I let him go where I found him so I go out there at night and feed him right in his burrow. Interesting.

The price of mealworms in pet stores is ridiculous. They say they're dirt cheap to breed but from my own experience... it costs a bit to get set up. I had to buy quite a few containers to grow them in. I finally found some good sized ones with lids at the .99 Cent Store. I think the biggest cost is buying the wheat bran. It used to be so cheap but the prices are going through the ceiling now. I keep hoping to find a good feed & grain store but it seems they're all selling it at higher prices because it's called bedding. And of course lots of carrots. I had it going for a while and was doing pretty well on production. But my friend, Elvis... the mockingbird disappeared and I kinda let it go. But now I have one little wren that comes by every day. Cutest little dude ever. He's always excited so his tail is a blur in any pictures I get of him. I'm old and pretty crippled up. Some days I just can't get out there to fill his feeder bowl so what we do is I call him and he always shows up. He sits on the ledge of my porch and I throw worms out for him. He makes a fun game out of it. He's getting braver and braver ever day. He'll come up to about 2 feet from me. Lol... I guess he knows I can't get up and chase him. To get my stock going again I just ordered 1,000 large worms and 2,000 medium for breeding. 3,000 mealworms is quite a sight. It won't take long to get them producing again. I'm tempted to keep 1,000 or so in a container just to show him. He'll flip out on that. BTW... I didn't know what to name him but I kept thinking of Rin Tin Tin, the old B & W TV show. I named him Wren Tin Tin. But he answers to Wren Tin for short. I bet your kids there are loving this experience. Good for you to show them the wonders of nature...

Does your organization sell these bird baths? I set one up with a solar pump and the motor failed within one week. I would love to set up a hanging birdbath with a reliable long term water flow like this one. Such cute birds, great video!

    • @WBU319

Alas, we do not sell this exact bath although we do have options that could result in something similar. This particular bath is a hodge-pudge of planter base, pebbles, and irrigation tube. It’s a shame about that solar pump. We were so eager to sell those but found that most people had the same issue that you had. We took in about 50% returns. That’s way too high to tolerate. The industry really needs to work on this product niche.

Don't put mealworms in your bird feeder! They attract moles! Just found this out after finding a mole infestation under my bird feeders in my new garden. Was using bird seed with dry mealworms.

    • @WBU319
      @WBU319 3 роки тому

Hmmm. What else was in it? I wouldn't be terribly surprise to hear that moles would consume live mealworms. This might be a case of correlation without causation although you certainly increase your chances of all kinds of issues when you put food out for wildlife.

I don't doubt that having a source of food that moles might be attracted to would tend to increase the chances of having one or more in your yard but I would think that you could keep mealworms from being accessible to moles with the right kind of feeders and accessories.

Does it mean they’re ready to fledge if they stop producing fecal sacs? I had some on my porch and they started hopping out and two of them stopped producing fecal sacks and the two others were still producing them and I was very worried about them but they all flew away with their parents. They flew from my hedge to my tree, and then flew to another small tree next to my house and there’s two babies huddling together. They were going up and down the oak tree there were originally four of them but now I can only find two. 😢

    • @WBU319
      @WBU319 3 роки тому

There might be some nuance in how it's said but I think the answer to your question is yes. They do tend to stop producing fecal sacs shortly before fledging. I would guess that the first to stop are the first hatched. You probably know that the eggs are laid about once per day. I would guess that the two who stopped producing fecal sacs first were the first two eggs laid and the first two birds to hatch.

@@WBU319 update: all fledglings and parents are doing great and there were no problems. They come back to their original place in my yard twice a week singing loudly. I have a bird pole with a hanging bath for them with a solar water flow and a meal worm cake container, they really like that. I still have no idea why they chose to use a plastic cup on my porch as a nest for their babies. We were very worried but we gave them their privacy. Thank you so much for your help and advice.

Crazy how far such a small bird can fly from the far north all the way to the tropical south, back and forth. I would assume the rufous and black chinned hummers replace the ruby throats and buff bellied hummers on their summer range along the Gulf Coast.

American tree sparrows can be identified by their distinctive lower mandible which is yellow and a contrasting dark grey upper mandible. Chipping sparrows have an all around grey beak. Tree sparrows also have a grey breast and tummy area along with grey on parts of the face, while on the other hand, chipping sparrows are white or light grey in these areas. They both have a similar rusty brown crown, but the chipping sparrow’s looks a bit more like a dollop of peanut butter. The chipping sparrow has a stylish black streak through the eye, meanwhile the tree sparrow has a thicker, messier brown eye line. Another thing to consider is the sparrow’s size. The tree sparrow is roughly the size of the familiar house finch or house sparrow. The chipping sparrow is nearly an inch smaller in size.
